May President’s Message

Jim Stahl

Portland Rose Society President

May has finally arrived and the weather has been great for our roses. It’s been a busy month for the Rose Society with the Blessing of the Rose Festival, the 82nd Avenue Parade, rose plantings in San Antonio, the Oregon Zoo rose planting and the upcoming trip to Wenatchee with the Royal Rosarians.

The Blessing was very successful with more people than is typical for the Blessing Event. Geneane and I were really excited to have the Blessing at our Church, St. John Fisher. The attendance may have been up because of all of the abundant parking and the great location. Everyone really enjoyed the rose garden there. I hope that you were able to join us for that event. If you have not yet attended a Blessing of the Festival where we honor the deceased members of the Rose Festival, Rose Society, Royal Rosarians and the Navy League and meet the new Rose Festival Court, please add it to your calendar for next year. It is truly
an inspiring thankful event. We travelled to San Antonio for the Fiesta for a rose planting at the historic Menger Hotel Courtyard next to the Alamo. The planting honored three outstanding citizens of the San Antonio Fiesta who have been friends of the Royal Rosarians for years. The Zoo rose planting honored the volunteer of the year, (see photo), and the upcoming Wenatchee rose planting honors this year’s President of the Applarians.

Soon it will be time for all of the splendor of the 2024 Portland Rose Festival! Please mark your calendar for the following upcoming events: the Starlight Parade, the Rosarian Rose Garden Contest, the Spring Rose Show, and the VIP rose planting. We still need participants for the Starlight Parade. This is a fun event and I encourage all of you to come join us and walk in the parade. It is one of those special times when you can have fun just walking and waving with thousands of people cheering you on and making it a night to remember. Please consider joining us for this event! If you want to show off all of your hard work and your rose garden, the applications for the Rose Garden Contest are due May 24th and the Awards ceremony is June 18th. You are welcome to enter if you have at least 12 roses and you are welcome to come to the Awards ceremony whether you enter or not.

The Spring Rose Show at the Lloyd Center is one of the largest rose shows in the country and we have plenty of room to make it even larger with your submissions again this year. The weather is looking great so far and I am confident it will be another spectacular Spring Rose Show! The VIP rose planting is an annual event where a rose is planted typically at the homes of the President of the Rose Festival, the President of the Rose Society President (me) and the Royal Rosarian Prime Minister. The event will take place on July 13th and will start at 10:00 am at the home of Rose Festival President, Contesa Diaz-Nicolaidis in Camas then on to my home in SW Portland at 12:30 pm and finally to the Prime Minister’s, Mike Ware, home for an event to remember at 3 pm in Hillsboro. Yes, it is an incredibly exciting, fun filled time of the year and you will not want to miss a second of it. Please join me and lets all “Dream Forward”.
