January President’s Message

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE from Jim Stahl
Welcome to 2024! I hope you enjoyed yourself during the Holidays and New Year season! Geneane and I enjoyed having our family over for Christmas and New Years and especially had a great time spending it with the grandkids! We made it through the holidays enjoying the shortest days of the year and now the days will start getting longer.

I hope you had a chance to make it to the November PRS membership meeting. The presentation for the meeting shared the life of Georgiana Pittock and Herman Hawkinson, her chauffeur. They provided us with more information regarding her life as the founding mother of the Portland Rose Society. They did a wonderful job explaining the history and the last 10 years of Georgiana’s life and what it was like to live in those days. I also hope you were able to take part in the bazaar. I enjoyed the many sweet items for sale.

Geneane and I also attended the Royal Rosarian Christmas Brunch on December 3rd . The event was held this year at the Crowne Plaza in NE Portland and was well attended by the Portland Rose Society with several
tables of members. We all had a great time showing our holiday spirit and the Rose Society took home more than our share of door prizes.

I attended the 2nd annual ARS presidents’ meeting by Zoom which was put on by
the ARS “Local Rose Society Advisory Committee.” The meeting was well attended with over 100 participants including Local ARS Presidents, District Directors, Regional Directors, and the ARS Administration. The meeting was very informative and included presentations on: Leadership tips for Effective Rose Society Meetings, Rose Shows and Rose Displays, and two presentations on Fundraising Ideas.

Geneane and I wish all of you a happy 2024 and I can’t wait for all the fun we will have over the next year. I look forward to seeing all of you at our meetings, rose
shows, pruning clinics and other events. Thank you for all that you do to be an integral part of the Portland Rose Society!

Jim
