November President’s message

Wow, it’s hard to believe it’s already November! The weather is still holding off and on at time of this message and our roses are still looking amazing. The forecast is for a warmer winter with El-Nino on the rise.

Being your new President, I’d like to introduce myself and let you know a little about me, my family and up-bringing. I’ve been involved with roses and the Rose Festival all my life. Many women in my family have the name Rose, which was my Grandmother’s name and she was heavily involved with the Portland Rose Society throughout the 50’s and 60’s. My Grandfather was a Royal Rosarian and my Aunt was the Secretary for the Rose Festival. It’s all about roses in our family and I am so honored to be your next President!

My first event was on September 17th. It was a very memorable rose planting and plaque Laying ceremony honoring the new Prime Minister Mike Ware and First Lady Colleen. The event was held at the Portland International Rose Test Garden.

I also participated in a rose ceremony during the Mike Ware Prime Minister’s trip to the St. Lawrence River where we honored the Captain and crew aboard the Ocean Navigator ship with a modified rose ceremony. It was a memorable moment and the crew of the ship were very impressed with the recognition they received.

Since then, I attended the Pacific NW District Fall Conference held at The Heathman Lodge in Vancouver. It was a very informative conference and Geneane and I really enjoyed the presentations. We learned about foliar fertilization, hybridizing, rose myths and sustainable rose gardens.

After the conference, I attended the Portland Rose Festival Foundation Board Meeting as the Portland Rose Society representative. The PRFF meeting is held every quarter and is a great way to meet the Board Members and connect with our sister organizations.

I look forward to the year ahead! Your President Jim Stahl
